Good oral hygiene is not just about keeping your smile bright—it could play a crucial role in protecting you from life-threatening diseases. Recent research suggests that failing to maintain proper oral care, such as brushing and flossing regularly, may triple the risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
The Link Between Oral Health and Pancreatic Cancer
For years, studies have shown that harmful bacteria and fungi in the mouth are linked to various health issues. Now, scientists from the NYU School of Medicine have identified specific bacteria and fungi that may significantly increase the risk of pancreatic cancer.
Their findings revealed that harmful microorganisms originating in the mouth can travel through saliva into the pancreas, where they contribute to cancer development. This discovery highlights that good oral hygiene may not only prevent gum disease but could also serve as a protective measure against one of the deadliest cancers.
What the Research Found
The study, published in JAMA Oncology, involved more than 122,000 participants tracked over an eight-year period.
- Researchers found 27 types of bacteria and fungi associated with pancreatic cancer.
- Among them, periodontal pathogens such as P. gingivalis, E. nodatum, and P. micra were linked with increased cancer risk.
- A particular fungus, Candida, was strongly associated with pancreatic cancer development.
Out of the participants, 445 developed pancreatic cancer, and researchers compared them with a control group of 445 cancer-free individuals. The findings made it clear: poor oral health significantly raises the risk of this aggressive cancer.
Why This Matters
Pancreatic cancer has one of the lowest survival rates, largely because it is often diagnosed too late. Symptoms may include:
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
- Fatigue and loss of appetite
- Digestive problems such as nausea, diarrhoea, or constipation
- Unexplained weight loss
- Upper stomach or back pain that worsens when lying down
Maintaining good oral hygiene could be a simple, preventive step in lowering your risk.
